Real answers to the questions Turo hosts ask most. In plain English, most common first, no walls of jargon.
Getting started
What is Fleconomy?
It tells you what each of your cars really earns. The name for this is fleet economic intelligence. Think of it as one place for profit per car, tax planning, claims help and a package for your CPA. You add your cars and log or import your trips. Then Fleconomy IQ works out what each car earns after depreciation and upkeep. It also shows your projected taxes, depreciation under current IRS rules, your S-Corp breakeven, and more. It does not file your taxes. It builds the package you give your CPA, so they spend less time and you pay less in fees.
I just signed up. Where do I start?
The dashboard shows a checklist to get you set up. Here are the seven steps in order:
- 1. Set your business profile in Settings (W-2 income, filing status, state). Every tax number in the app uses it.
- 2. Add your first car.
- 3. Log or import your first trip (Trip P&L tab → Import Turo CSV).
- 4. Run a tax projection (Tax Center).
- 5. Run the buy-a-car math on a car you own or one you are thinking about (Freedom Planner).
- 6. Build a CPA Handoff package.
- 7. Bookmark this page.
Each step takes 2–5 minutes. The whole setup takes less than 20 minutes.
Is Fleconomy affiliated with Turo?
No. Fleconomy is its own tool. A Turo host, Maurice Goring, built it for other Turo hosts. Turo Inc. does not endorse it, sponsor it, partner with it or run it. Turo's API limits and terms don't apply to us, because we never talk to Turo's servers. You bring the data in with a CSV export. It lives in your browser and in your private cloud sync.
Does Fleconomy give tax advice?
No. Fleconomy is software that does math with tables the IRS publishes (2024 Rev. Proc. 2024-13, 2024-40, 2025-32, etc.) and shows you the result. It cannot judge your full tax picture, your state's own rules, AMT, credits, or audit risk. Every tab has a red banner that reminds you to check the numbers with a licensed CPA before you act. Maurice (the founder) is a Turo host, not a CPA, and that's the point. Your CPA is the one who files. Fleconomy gives you and your CPA better numbers to start from.
Does my data sync across devices?
Yes. Your fleet, trips, business profile and settings sync to a private Supabase cloud tied to your license. Sign in from your laptop, phone or tablet and you see the same data. You can also work fully offline. Fleconomy is a Progressive Web App: it keeps the latest version on your device and syncs back when you are online. All data is encrypted in transit and at rest.
Trips & CSV import
How do I import my Turo trips?
1. Log into Turo on a computer browser. 2. Go to Earnings → Export CSV. 3. Pick the date range. 4. In Fleconomy, open Trip P&L → click "Import Turo CSV" → upload the file. Fleconomy finds the columns on its own. You check the preview, and the trips are added.
It is safe to import the same months again. We spot repeats by their Turo trip ID.
Why doesn't my Trip P&L total match my Turo dashboard?
Most of the time it is one of four things. (1) The dates differ: Turo's "year-to-date" vs. the year you picked in Fleconomy. (2) Turo's number is often gross. Fleconomy shows you net, after Turo's cut (platform commission). (3) Refunds: Turo takes them out right away. Fleconomy keeps the trip and the refund as two separate lines. (4) A booking that runs across New Year's may land in a different tax year. Fleconomy uses the trip start date, and you can change that. To match what the IRS sees, use the 1099-K Reconciliation tab.
The CSV import is failing or showing wrong numbers. What now?
Open the CSV Intelligence Engine tab. It shows you just which columns Fleconomy is reading and which it has not matched. Common causes: Turo changed its export format (we update for it within ~48 hours of seeing it). Or your CSV has merged or split columns from a copy-paste. Or you exported from your phone, and phone exports sometimes cut off part of the file. If you're stuck, drag the file into Ask IQ and tell it what you see. It can most often spot what doesn't line up.
Can I edit a trip after I logged it?
Yes. Click any trip in the Trip P&L table to open it. You can change dates, revenue, expenses or which car it belongs to, or delete it. Edits sync to the cloud right away. Note: if you change a trip's date or car, we redo that year's P&L, Schedule C draft and 1099-K reconciliation.
What's the difference between Trip P&L and the Dashboard?
The Dashboard is the whole fleet at a glance: key numbers (KPIs), charts and a table of how each car does. Trip P&L is trip by trip: one row per booking, with the math for each. Use the Dashboard to see the big picture. Use Trip P&L to find one booking, fix a mistake, or see which trip lengths earn the most and the least.
Tax & depreciation
What is bonus depreciation and why is OBBBA important?
Bonus depreciation lets you deduct the full cost of a business asset in the year it's placed in service. Without it, you spread the cost over 5+ years (MACRS). For Turo hosts, this often means one car purchase can wipe out your W-2 tax bill in Year 1.
OBBBA (One Big Beautiful Bill Act, 2025) brought bonus depreciation back to 100%. It had dropped to 60% in 2024. So for cars placed in service in 2025 or later, you can deduct 100% of the cost. For cars under 6,000 lbs GVWR, the §280F luxury caps still apply.
Why does GVWR matter so much for vehicle depreciation?
A car's weight rating decides which of two very different depreciation rules you get. The number is its GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating).
Under 6,000 lbs: §280F luxury-auto caps apply. The Year-1 deduction is capped at ~$20,400 with 100% bonus depreciation, or ~$12,400 without bonus.
6,000 lbs or over: No §280F caps. You can deduct the entire vehicle basis in Year 1 (times your business-use percentage).
That's why a Tahoe, Suburban or Wagoneer can give you a $60K+ Year-1 deduction, while a Tesla Model 3 tops out at ~$20K. Read the GVWR off the sticker in the driver's door frame. Never trust an ad or a sales page for it.
What's the difference between §179 and bonus depreciation?
§179: It has a yearly cap (~$1.16M in 2024, and it goes up with inflation). It CANNOT create a net business loss. You can only deduct up to the business's taxable income.
Bonus: No yearly cap. It CAN create a loss that carries forward and offsets W-2 income right away.
Most Turo hosts with a W-2 want bonus. That's the whole "wipe out my W-2 tax with a car purchase" play. §179 is better when your state does not follow the federal bonus rule (it has "decoupled"). California, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania are known for this. Then §179 keeps your state and federal numbers in line (state-level conformity).
Why is my Year-1 tax savings number lower than I expected?
There are three usual causes. (1) The car is under 6,000 lbs GVWR, so the §280F luxury caps apply. (2) Your business-use percentage is below 100%. Each percent you lose cuts your deduction by the same share. (3) Your W-2 bracket is lower than you think. Savings = deduction × your top (marginal) tax rate. So a $50K deduction at the 22% bracket saves $11K, not $18.5K. Check all three before you assume it's a bug.
Do I owe self-employment (SE) tax on Turo income?
It depends on how the IRS sees your Turo work. If it is a "trade or business," it goes on Schedule C and SE tax applies. If it is "rental of personal property," it goes on Schedule 1 line 8l, with no SE tax. The IRS has not given Turo hosts a clear safe harbor. In real life, most hosts who run more than a few trips report on Schedule C. They pay 15.3% SE tax, less the 7.65% deduction for the employer half. This is a real CPA call. Keep a record of your hours and that you run it as a business.
How does the §199A QBI deduction apply to Turo?
§199A can give sole owners, S-Corps and partnerships a deduction of up to 20% on "qualified business income" (QBI). Whether your Turo work counts turns on the same "trade or business" question as SE tax. If it counts, you deduct 20% of your net Turo profit. That phases out at higher income (above ~$241K MFJ / $191K single in 2024). If the IRS treats your work as passive rental, there is no QBI deduction. Fleconomy estimates QBI once you mark your work as Schedule C. Check it with your CPA before you file.
What's "depreciation recapture" and when does it bite?
Say you write off a car fast, using bonus depreciation or section 179. If your business use of that car later drops under 50%, the IRS "recaptures" it. That means the extra you wrote off early comes back as regular income, in the year your use drops. It can be a painful bill years after you took the deduction. Practical rule: if you are not sure you will keep the car in business use for the full 5 years, think twice before writing it all off in year one.
Should I make estimated quarterly tax payments?
Yes, if the tax you owe for the year (after W-2 withholding) is more than ~$1,000. If you don't, you'll owe a penalty for paying too little (an underpayment penalty). Use the IRS "safe harbor": pay 100% of last year's tax (110% if AGI > $150K), split into even quarterly payments. Fleconomy's Quarterly Autopilot tracks this for you and warns you before each due date.
1099-K & the IRS
My 1099-K is way bigger than what I actually got paid. Is that a mistake?
No. It's correct, and it's the #1 cause of CP2000 mismatch notices. Turo reports the gross booking amount the guest paid. That includes Turo's platform fee, taxes and your share. You only saw the net deposit. On Schedule C, report the gross as revenue. Then deduct Turo's commission as an expense. You end up with the same number, and a paper trail that holds up in an audit.
What if I don't get a 1099-K?
You still owe tax. The 1099-K threshold has changed many times. First the American Rescue Plan lowered it. Then the IRS phased that change in through a series of notices. Then the One Big Beautiful Bill Act repealed the lower threshold and put back the old rule: more than $20,000 in gross payments and more than 200 transactions. Some states set their own lower thresholds, so check yours. Below the threshold, no form is sent, but the income is still taxable. Report it either way.
I got a CP2000 notice. What do I do?
A CP2000 is NOT an audit. It's a letter a computer sends when the numbers don't match. It says "the income on your return doesn't match what your payers reported." You have 30 days to respond.
- If you reported too little (you forgot the gross-vs-net rule): write back that you agree, and pay the difference plus interest.
- If they're wrong (the 1099-K had an error): write back that you disagree. Attach the 1099-K Reconciliation from Fleconomy and your trip log.
Do not ignore the letter. If you stay silent, the IRS bills you by default (a default assessment).
How does Fleconomy's 1099-K Reconciliation tool work?
It adds up all your logged trips, upkeep, claims and pay-backs (reimbursements) for the tax year you picked. From that it works out the gross revenue Turo would have reported on your 1099-K. The Auto-load button fills in the form, and you can change any field. You get a sheet that says "what to report on Schedule C." It comes with a note (the variance footnote) you can use to explain any gap to the IRS.
What if I get audited?
Most audits of Turo hosts are done by mail ("correspondence audits"). You send papers, they review them, and it's over. The key is a paper trail that is organized and holds up: trip logs by car, records of your business-use percentage, receipts for expenses and mileage logs. Fleconomy's CPA Handoff package is built to be audit-ready from the start. If the audit moves to in person, hire an Enrolled Agent or a tax attorney. Don't represent yourself.
S-Corp & entity structure
At what profit does S-Corp election save me money?
Rule of thumb: ~$80K of net Turo profit after expenses. Below that, the costs of an S-Corp eat up most of the SE-tax savings. Those costs are a payroll service, a separate tax return, state minimum franchise tax in CA/NY, and more bookkeeping. Fleconomy's S-Corp Analyzer shows the breakeven for your own numbers.
What's a "reasonable salary" and how do I pick the number?
The IRS says S-Corp owners must pay themselves "reasonable compensation" for the work they do. That is about what you would pay someone else to run your Turo fleet. For Turo hosts, it's most often 40–60% of net profit. Check it against what fleet managers earn where you live ($50K–$90K full-time, scaled to your hours). Too low = IRS audit risk. Too high = you lose the SE-tax savings.
How do I actually elect S-Corp status?
1. Form an LLC (if you haven't). 2. Get an EIN from the IRS (free, 10 minutes). 3. File Form 2553 within 2 months and 15 days of the start of the tax year you want the election to begin. For a business on the calendar year, that's March 15. 4. Set up payroll (Gusto, OnPay, ADP). You are now an employee of your own company.
Get a CPA involved before you file Form 2553. The choice is hard to undo for 5 years.
What does S-Corp cost per year to maintain?
Expect ~$1,500–$3,500 a year in all. Payroll service: $500–$1,000/yr. Bookkeeping, if you pay someone: $2,400–$6,000/yr. Tax return prep for Form 1120-S: $800–$2,000. State franchise tax: CA $800, NY $25–$4,500, most others $0–$300. Subtract this from Fleconomy's projected SE-tax savings to see what you really gain.
Can I un-do S-Corp election if it stops working?
Yes. But once you revoke, you must wait 5 years before you can elect again. So don't elect just to "try it." Model it with care first.
Cohost partner profiles
What's a "cohost partner" in Fleconomy?
Someone whose car you manage on Turo. They own the title. Turo sends the 1099-K to them. You run the day-to-day work and most often take a management fee. Fleconomy gives each cohost their own profile inside your one login. That keeps their Schedule C, depreciation and 1099-K reconciliation apart from yours.
Will my main-host numbers include cohost cars?
No, on purpose. Use the "Viewing as: ▼" picker in the top bar to switch between your books and each cohost's. The Dashboard, Fleet, Trip P&L and Schedule C draft all show only the profile you picked. The cohost can't log in on their own, since you, the manager, have the only login. But you can send their accountant a clean package with only their numbers, using the CPA Handoff magic-link share.
How do I assign vehicles to a cohost?
When you add or edit a car, pick the cohost from the "Owner" dropdown. For a car you already have, edit it and switch the owner. To move many cars at once, pick the cohost in the top bar picker, then import their Turo earnings CSV. Every car in that CSV goes to the cohost you picked.
How many cohosts can I have on my plan?
As many as you want. Every plan, even free Solo, has unlimited cohost partner profiles.
Can the cohost log in to see their own data?
Not in this version. Only the main host has a login. When you build a cohost's CPA Handoff package, they get a read-only "magic link." With that link, their CPA can download the Schedule C draft, mileage log and depreciation schedule. They don't need a Fleconomy account.
Working with your CPA
What goes in the CPA Handoff package?
Six main pieces: (1) Schedule C draft with revenue, COGS and each expense; (2) mileage log for each car; (3) depreciation schedule for every active car; (4) 1099-K reconciliation showing gross vs. net, with a note on any gap (variance footnote); (5) receipt list from the Document Vault; (6) claim and insurance summary. It is all set up to hold up in an audit.
When should I send the package to my CPA?
End of January, at the latest. CPAs get slammed from Feb 1 to April 15. Show up in January and you are at the front of the line. Show up in March and you wait. Pro move: send a first draft in November (Jan–Oct plus projections). Get her feedback. Then send the final package in mid-January.
I don't have a CPA. How do I find a good one for Turo?
Look for: (1) has done Schedule C returns for short-term rental or car-rental hosts; (2) knows bonus depreciation and the §280F luxury caps; (3) works in your state, so they know its tax rules. Avoid tax-prep chains and Enrolled Agents who only do W-2 returns. Expect $400–$1,500 for a Schedule C return, based on how complex it is. Get a flat-fee quote in writing before you hire them.
My CPA says she doesn't need the Fleconomy package. Should I still send it?
Yes, and be polite about it. CPAs bill by the hour. A ready-made package cuts their prep time by 50–80%. You save money, she gets a cleaner file, and the IRS gets better paperwork. If she wants to start from scratch anyway, ask why. Sometimes it's a billing floor (a fixed minimum). If she waves off good prep altogether, that's a yellow flag about how she works.
How do I email the package to my CPA?
Use the "Email to my CPA" button at the top of the CPA Handoff tab. It makes a secure magic link, so your CPA can see the package without a Fleconomy account. The link stops working after 30 days. You can also export PDFs and send them yourself. Subject line: "{Your name} – {Tax year} Turo Schedule C package."
Business valuation & exit
What is SDE and how is it different from net profit?
SDE stands for Seller's Discretionary Earnings. It is your net profit, plus what you pay yourself, plus costs that use no cash (depreciation), plus one-time or personal costs run through the business. SDE answers one question: what would a new owner take home if they ran the business just like you do? Buyers use SDE because it compares owners fairly, even when they handle tax and pay in different ways.
Why does the multiple range go from 2× to 4×? What gets me to 4×?
What holds the multiple down is owner-dependence: how much the business needs you. 2×: small fleet, you do every cleaning, no written steps (SOPs), messy books. 3×: 4–8 cars, written steps, clean books. 4×: a cohost or VA runs the day-to-day, 24+ months of clean books, and a buyer could step in and not touch operations for 90 days. In the 12 months before you list, making the business run without you is the biggest thing you can do.
Who actually buys Turo businesses?
Three kinds of buyer. (1) Other Turo hosts who want to grow fast. They pay 2×–3× SDE. (2) Small local rental shops moving into peer-to-peer. They pay 2×–3.5× SDE. (3) Private investors or search funders who want a business that throws off cash. They pay 3×–4×+ SDE if the business can run without the owner there. Each kind of buyer pays a different multiple. Pitch your listing to the one you want.
How long before listing should I start exit prep?
12–18 months at least. Buyers want clean books for the last twelve months (trailing twelve months, or TTM). If your books are messy today, you have 12 months to fix them before due diligence. Also: write down your steps (SOPs), keep personal and business costs apart, and train a cohost or VA so the business runs without you. Selling in a rush ("I want out next month") costs 30–50% of your multiple.
Is the Fleconomy Valuation Report something I can show a real buyer?
It's a strong starting point for talks, backed by your real numbers. But it's NOT a certified appraisal. For a sale over ~$250K, hire a credentialed business broker or M&A advisor. Their fee is 3–10% of the sale price. For a sale under $250K, the Fleconomy report plus a sit-down with your CPA is most often enough to negotiate with confidence.
Billing, plans & account
What plans do you offer?
A free plan and three paid plans. The plans differ by how many cars you can run.
- Solo (free forever) — 1 vehicle, no credit card.
- Operator ($35/mo or $350/yr) — up to 3 vehicles. Best for a host who works alone.
- Fleet ($49/mo or $490/yr) — up to 10 vehicles. 14-day free trial, no card to start.
- Empire ($119/mo or $1,190/yr) — unlimited vehicles.
Every plan, free Solo too, includes profit and loss per car, CSV import, the dashboard, expenses, maintenance, the documents vault, leak detection, quarterly tax estimates, the Tax Center, Ask IQ and the AI advisors, Business Formation & Compliance and unlimited cohost profiles. Cloud sync and mobile + desktop access are included too.
Two add-ons sit on top of any plan. The Tax Suite covers S-corp savings, OBBBA bonus depreciation, 1099-K reconciliation, the CPA handoff, the Freedom Planner and Claim Reality Check. It costs $12 a month on Solo, $19 on Operator, $29 on Fleet and $49 on Empire. The Exit & Investor Suite covers business valuation, the investor share page and full benchmarks. It costs $15 a month on Operator, $25 on Fleet and $39 on Empire (it is not offered on Solo). Both together cost $27, $43 or $70 a month. The 14-day Fleet trial includes both add-ons. Paying yearly costs 10 times the monthly price, so you get 2 months free.
Already on Lifetime? The one-time Lifetime plan closed on July 24, 2026 and is no longer sold. If you bought it, you keep your Lifetime licence for up to 15 vehicles, and you are never billed for it again. The add-ons are not part of Lifetime.
How do I cancel?
Go to Settings → Billing → "Manage Subscription." That opens your Stripe Customer Portal. You can cancel any time. You keep access until the end of the billing period you paid for. After that, we keep your data for 90 days in case you come back. After 90 days the data is deleted for good (purged).
Do you offer refunds?
Yes. You get a full refund within 14 days of your first purchase, no questions asked. For renewals (year 2+), we decide each case on its own. Email info@fleconomyiq.com.
What payment methods do you accept?
All major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Discover), plus Apple Pay and Google Pay, through Stripe. We don't take ACH, PayPal or crypto right now.
Can I upgrade or downgrade my plan?
Yes, any time, in Settings → Billing (open the profile menu → Manage Billing, or Change Plan). A plan change starts right away, and you pay only for the time you use (it is prorated). When you upgrade, the time you have not used on your old plan counts toward the new one. When you downgrade, you get a credit for the difference.
Say a downgrade leaves you with more cars than the new plan allows (for example, you move from Empire to Operator with 15 cars). Nothing is deleted and nothing is hidden. Your whole fleet keeps working and syncing. You just can't add another car until you are back under the limit or you upgrade again. The Fleet tab shows which plan you are on and how many cars it allows.
Privacy, data & security
Where is my data stored?
In two places. A copy stays in your browser, so the app still works offline. A copy is also saved to our database, locked to your license key. Your rows are walled off from every other customer, so no other user can see them. The one exception is benchmark sharing, which is off until you turn it on (see the next question). Fleconomy staff only open your data if you ask us to in writing — to help you fix a problem, for example.
Is my data shared with other hosts?
Not unless you turn on benchmark sharing in Settings. Your CSV is still read in your browser. If you opt in, rounded ranges for each car (market, vehicle class, daily rate, utilization and net earnings per vehicle-day) join a shared pool, and other hosts see them only in groups of at least ten accounts. Never your name, VINs, plates, addresses, trip dates or guests. If you do not opt in, you do not see benchmarks. Turn it off and your contribution is deleted.
Is my data encrypted?
Yes. In transit: TLS 1.3 on every request. At rest: AES-256 (the Supabase default for managed Postgres). License keys are bcrypt-hashed. Payment data never touches our servers, because Stripe handles all card data. See the full Privacy Policy.
What happens to my data if I cancel?
Your access ends when your current billing period ends. We keep your data for 90 days in case you come back. After 90 days, all customer data is deleted from our live databases (purged). Backups roll off within 12 months, on our retention schedule. You can email support to ask us to delete it right away. We'll confirm it is done within 30 days.
- Open the app and try Ask IQ, our AI helper. It answers from your own data and our tax knowledge base.
- Email info@fleconomyiq.com. We read every message and most often reply within 24 hours.
