What You Don't Measure You Don't Protect
Fees, maintenance, financing and the value the car lost all come out after that number — and a confident wrong profit number costs you more than no number at all. So Fleconomy is built around fifteen rules about what it is not allowed to show you: your tax write-off never becomes your car’s value, a loan payment is never charged against profit, and when a figure is unknown the field stays empty instead of filling with a guess.
Each of those rules is published with the automated test that enforces it — see the receipts. Your CSV in; a per-vehicle P&L, what each car is now worth against book, your real tax position and a CPA handoff out.

What we will not tell you
Anyone can claim their numbers are accurate. These are the rules that decide what a number in Fleconomy is allowed to say — each one published with the automated test that enforces it, re-run every time we ship.
Bonus and §179 expense the whole car in year one. A car that wrote it off and is still worth the money has lost nothing — reach for the tax figure and you report a loss that never happened, worst for the hosts who filed most correctly.
Principal is you moving your own money into equity. Charge the whole payment against profit and a financed car reads as a loser next to an identical cash car earning exactly the same. Cash flow and operating profit stay separate lines.
A guessed number is indistinguishable from a measured one once it is on screen, and it is the guesses that get quoted and filed. No market value means no answer — not a plausible one.
Most tools treat a sold car as a row to delete, which destroys the only complete record you will ever have of it — purchase to sale. Disposal is a status here. The car is marked and kept.
Our own test suite, not a third-party audit. It proves each rule is enforced in code — not that any number is right for your situation.

The strategy, in plain English
The One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) was signed in 2025. It brought back 100% bonus depreciation for good. It covers qualified business property bought and put to use (placed in service) after January 19, 2025. The old law (TCJA 2017) had stepped it down: 80% in 2023, 60% in 2024, 40% in 2025. So this is a big reset.
Here is how it works for a Turo host. Say you buy a car and place it in service after Jan 1, 2026. You get a Year-1 deduction equal to the full purchase price, less salvage, times your business-use percentage. That deduction lowers your Schedule C net income. If it creates a Schedule C net loss, the loss moves to Form 1040 Line 8. There it lowers your Adjusted Gross Income, including the AGI from your W-2 wages. You must materially participate (IRC 469). Most active Turo hosts, at 500+ hours a year, meet that test.
Fleconomy IQ's Freedom Planner runs this against your real W-2 tax bracket, using the IRS bracket table. Then it adds your expected rental profit to show your TRUE Year-1 return after tax. Read the full guidance at IRS Publication 946. Always confirm specifics with your CPA. For the complete playbook, see our Turo tax strategy guide.

Founder note
Five years into Turo, my CPA looked at my books and said "Maurice, you're a mess. You need a bookkeeper." He was right. Receipts in shoeboxes. Trips reconciled from memory. Spreadsheets that broke at vehicle 4. The $11,400 in OBBBA bonus depreciation my CPA didn't know about — left on the table that year alone. So I built the bookkeeper myself. Then I added the tax-strategy brain. Then the exit toolkit. This is what it became.
Now it's yours. Every calculator started as a problem I had to solve at 11pm before a return was due. If you're a W-2 earner running Turo as a tax-strategic side business, this was built for the seat you're in.

Questions hosts ask
Substantive answers, in plain English. If you're a W-2 earner thinking about Turo as a tax-strategic side business, start here.
Yes, and the reason is in how the tax rules work, not in anyone's story. Say you are in the 32% federal bracket and buy $42,000 of cars. You use 100% bonus depreciation under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) of 2025. The Year-1 cut to tax on your W-2 pay alone is about $13,440 federal plus state, before any rental profit. Add Solo 401(k) deferral on Schedule C net income (up to $69,000/year). Now Turo pays you four ways: cash flow, a tax shield, retirement savings and a business you can sell. Fleconomy IQ runs all four against your real W-2 bracket.
Yes, if you materially participate (work in it actively). Turo income goes on Schedule C as self-employment income. Car depreciation (bonus, Section 179 or MACRS) is a business cost on Schedule C. The loss, or the lower profit, moves to Form 1040 Line 8. There it lowers your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI), which cuts the tax on your W-2 wages. The material participation test (IRC 469) usually needs 500+ hours a year. Most active Turo hosts meet it. Ask a CPA about your own case.
Bonus depreciation lets you deduct the full price of a business asset that qualifies in the year you start using it (place it in service). You don't have to spread it over 5 years (MACRS) or stay under a yearly cap (Section 179). The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 set bonus at 100% but stepped it down (80% in 2023, 60% in 2024, 40% in 2025). The One Big Beautiful Bill Act of 2025 brought back 100% bonus depreciation for good. It covers qualified property bought and placed in service after January 19, 2025. For Turo hosts, a $30,000 car bought and placed in service after that date gives a full $30,000 deduction in Year 1. That is scaled by your business-use percentage.
A Solo 401(k) lets a self-employed person put money in two ways. As the worker, you can put in up to $23,000 in 2024, or $30,500 with the age 50+ catch-up. As the boss, you can put in up to 20% of adjusted net SE income for sole props, or 25% of W-2 wages for S-Corps. The joint cap is $69,000 in 2024 ($76,500 with catch-up). Each dollar you put in cuts your taxable income by a dollar. For a Turo host with $50,000 net SE profit, that is about $32,000 of tax-deferred savings, on top of any bonus depreciation. It is a second tax shield on top of the first.
The IRS uses a 9-factor test under Section 183 to tell a business from a hobby. Key factors: do you aim to make a profit, how much time and effort you put in, past success in similar work, your history of income and losses, and your money situation. The Hobby Loss Test in Fleconomy IQ walks through these. In practice, if you made a profit in 3 of the last 5 years, the IRS assumes it is a business. If you show losses every year next to a high W-2, expect a close look. Fleconomy IQ's audit-defense record tools are built for just that.
Generally when Schedule C net profit consistently exceeds about $80,000–$100,000/year. The S-Corp election splits profit into two parts. One is a reasonable W-2 salary, which owes 15.3% SE/payroll tax. The other is distributions, which owe no SE tax. At ~$100K profit, the SE-tax savings (about $5,000–$10,000/year) start to beat the added costs. Those are the CA $800 franchise tax minimum, payroll service at ~$2,400/year and ~$1,500 more in CPA fees. The S-Corp Election Analyzer in Fleconomy IQ finds your own break-even, based on your state and the salary you set.
It depends on your daily rate, your utilization and your monthly living costs, not just your gross W-2. The W-2 Independence Runway calculator on the Dashboard does the math. It takes your fleet's real rate × 30 days × 75% typical utilization × 80% Turo payout to project your monthly net. Then it divides that into your monthly costs to show how much they cover. As a rule of thumb, an $80/day average vehicle at 65% utilization nets ~$1,250/month after Turo's cut. Four to six cars often cover a middle-class household's costs. Eight to ten gets you above median household income.
Most Turo fleet sales close at 2× to 4× annual SDE (Seller's Discretionary Earnings). SDE = net profit + owner's salary + depreciation + interest + one-time expenses. It is roughly the cash a buyer would get if they hired someone to run it in your place. Fleconomy IQ's Business Valuation tab works out SDE from your real data. It applies multiples for fleet size, how long you have run it and your market. Then it writes a Confidential Information Memorandum (CIM) you can hand to buyers or business brokers.
Both let you fully deduct a car in Year 1. Here is how they differ. Section 179 has a cap (about $1.16M in 2024, raised to $2.5M under OBBBA 2025). It cannot create a net loss. If 179 is more than your business income, the rest carries forward. Bonus depreciation has no yearly cap, and it CAN create a net loss that offsets W-2 income. For most W-2 earners on Turo buying one car at a time, bonus depreciation is the better tool. The whole point is a loss that shields W-2 wages. For Section 179 to cover the full price, the vehicle must be >6,000 lb GVWR. Bonus depreciation has no GVWR floor for qualified business property.
Turo retired the older 70%/80%/90% fixed host-share plans in 2026. The new model has three tiers: More peace of mind, Balanced and More earnings. In each plan, your host share depends on how far ahead the trip is booked. 28+ days ahead = top of range, 14–27 days = −5%, 3–13 days = −10%, 0–2 days = −15%. Damage responsibility (your share of repair costs in a claim) goes up as your host share goes up: $250 (More peace of mind), $1,500 (Balanced), $2,750 (More earnings). Fleconomy IQ's Insurance Plan tab works out the host share you really earn, based on how far ahead your trips tend to be booked.
Yes, in most cases. Turo income is self-employment income reported on Schedule C. So the IRS wants quarterly estimated tax payments if you expect to owe at least $1,000 in tax for the year after withholding and credits. The four federal due dates are April 15, June 15, September 15 and the next January 15. Each moves to the next business day if it lands on a weekend or holiday. To avoid an underpayment penalty (Form 2210), you usually pay the smaller of two amounts: 90% of this year's tax, or 100% of last year's tax. That second one is 110% if last year's AGI was over $150,000. That is the safe-harbor rule. W-2 hosts have another option. Instead of writing quarterly checks, raise your paycheck withholding. The IRS treats it as paid evenly over the year, no matter when it came out. Fleconomy IQ's Quarterly Tax Autopilot estimates each payment from your live Schedule C numbers and tracks the safe-harbor target. Ask a CPA about your own case.
